More than 70 vintage automotive works of art hit
the road from Phoenix to Northern Arizona and then
stepped into the geologic wonders of Utah for a fabulous
four-day tour on the Copperstate 1000 vintage rally
in 2006.

A sunset cocktail cruise on Lake Powell brought
the participants to an awaiting dinner on the beach
with crackling bonfires keeping them warm.
Barry Meguiar (the Grand Marshal) and Richie Clyne
had their hands full piloting a gorgeous 6000-pound
1932 Duesenberg Judkins Coupe (below) when they were
descending from 9000-foot elevations. "We used
everything... brakes, gears, parking brake to keep
from loosing control!" said Meguiar. "But
we had a great time and a good workout."

Monday was one of the longest days ever attempted
on the Copperstate, with the cars covering 394 miles,
but it proved to be one of the best as well -- from
Lake Powell past Zion and Bryce Canyon and then through
Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument and Capitol
Reef National Park, winding up in the splendor of
red rock country in Moab. (Seen below are Bill and
Mari Roberts in their 1928 Bentley 4.5-liter.)

The next day, the tour lunched in the midst of Monument
Valley's red buttes, and then motored through Native
American country for an overnight at Sedona Rouge
Resort. (Shown below are Gordon and Janet Apker in
their 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB.)

On the final day of this of this motoring adventure,
after a lunch stop at the base of Stewart Mountain
Dam, the cars cruised the edge of Phoenix to gather
for the awards banquet at the Western Kierland Resort
& Spa in Scottsdale. (There was no snow in Phoenix,
but there certainly was on the San Francisco Mountains
of northern Arizona. Shown below are John Craft and
Dale Lilard in a 1936 Cord 810 Westchester.)
